WHAT DOES A MUSIC THERAPIST DO?
After completing the client's assessment, the therapist carefully designs a structured program to address the physical, emotional, social and psychological needs of the client based on the stated goals and objectives. The therapy sessions may include singing, therapeutic instrument playing, dancing/movement, and musical improvisation, as well as the use of colorful and novel props such as puppets, toys, musical storybooks, stuffed animals, bubbles, balloons, beach balls, parachutes, scarves, ribbon dancers and much more!!
 
WHAT EDUCATION MUST A MUSIC THERAPIST HAVE?
The music therapist obtains a bachelor degree with studies emphasizing music skills, science, psychology, and clinical application of music with a variety of populations. In accordance with the American Music Therapy Association's (AMTA) Standards for Educational and Clinical Training, a Music Therapist-Board Certified (MT-BC) must demonstrate a high level of musical and clinical skills, pass a certification exam, and maintain continuing education credits. The MT-BC is responsible for assessing, designing, implementing, and evaluating music therapy practice with a wide range of client populations.
